Do Something for Yourself, Organize Your Closet
Odds are, when you first moved into your house you were thrilled with all the closet
space you seemed to have, but now that you have lived there for a while, do you wonder
if you really had all the space you first thought you did? Can you still see the floor in
your closet, or do you have to spend some time tossing clothes, shoes, books, and purses
aside to find it? The old adage is true, the more space you find in your home, the more
stuff you think you have to buy to put into it! This is doubly true when it comes to your
closet space.
For many people, their closet not only holds their clothing and accessories, but anything
else that they don’t have space for as well. You may be shocked to find just how much
stuff you actually have in your closet when you start trying to clean it out and organize it.
Some people even end up storing their Christmas ornaments in their closet, for lack of a
better place. Even if you do have to put items in your closet that don’t really belong there,
it doesn’t have to be a cluttered mess!
When you decide it is time to organize your closet, the first thing you should do is take
every single item out, and decide whether or not you really need to keep it. If you have
something that you haven’t seen in years, or clothes that you no longer wear, is there
really any point in having them take up much needed closet space? Have a yard sale, or
donate those items to the local charity, just do something to get them out of your home.
Once you have weeded out the items that you don’t need to keep, organize everything
else. Make a heap for summer clothing, shoes, purses, books, bedding, etc. When you are
finished look at your piles, so you can get an idea of how much space you need to
accommodate them. This will help you determine the type of closet organizer you need to
buy and install.
You can add shelving units, cubbies, hooks, drawers, etc. into your closet to add more
storage space. Whatever you can think of, you can find a closet organizer designed that
way. It is all a matter of determining what you need, finding it, and installing it.
If you wind up with more space than you need, turn it into extra storage space, rather than
cluttering it back up again. If you keep everything organized, and take up the empty
space with storage items, you will be less likely to pile it all back up again. Remember,
your goal is not just to organize and clean out your closet, but to keep it that way for as
long as possible!
